Aerial ladder platform vehicle

An aerial ladder platform vehicle also known as an aerial platform or hydraulic platform is a specialized fire apparatus used by fire brigades primarily for rescue, firefighting, and access operations at height. Its main purposes include allows safe evacuation of people trapped in high-rise buildings or inaccessible upper floors also it is equipped with water monitors that can spray water or foam from height, enables direct firefighting access to upper floors or rooftops of tall buildings.

Features of this vehicle.

The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) has a diverse fleet of firefighting vehicles, which includes Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) vehicles. In the past, the department utilized Turntable Ladders and Snorkel vehicles; however, these have since been condemned due to outdated technology. Currently, updated models of Aerial Ladder Platform vehicles are being deployed for firefighting and rescue operations in high-rise buildings.

These vehicles are specifically designed for aerial firefighting and rescue purposes. The ladder boom of the ALP is capable of reaching up to 54 meters in height, with a maximum horizontal outreach of 22 meters and a downward reach of 4.5 meters below ground level. The vehicle is equipped with a rescue cage that can safely carry up to 400 kg, allowing for the evacuation of multiple individuals at once from elevated locations. The cage is fitted with a rescue flap, which enables the safe transport of unconscious victims, along with an integrated oxygen supply system.

An extendable ladder is also provided along with the boom system, facilitating the evacuation of people from multi-storey buildings. For firefighting capabilities, the vehicle is fitted with a high-capacity automated water monitor capable of discharging 3,800 liters per minute (LPM) at a height of 54 meters. This enables accurate targeting of the fire’s seat and effective control of fire spread in high-rise structures.

A water curtain system is installed beneath of the rescue cage to protect victims from radiant heat during rescue operations. Moreover, the vehicle is designed with advanced safety features and is considered highly reliable. It includes a fail-safe system with multiple backup options such as an auxiliary engine, battery power, and gravity-based operation, which allow boom movement even in the event of main engine failure.

The boom is structurally capable of withstanding wind speeds up to 12.5 m/s, and the system will automatically issue a warning alarm to the operator if wind speeds exceed safe operational limits.

Skylift Vehicle (104 Mtrs):

This vehicle is used for the same purpose as described in the previous section. It features a working boom height of 104 meters and a side outreach of 28 meters and a downward reach of 8 meters below ground level. The vehicle includes all the key features of the 54-meter model, except the ladder, which has been intentionally omitted for safety reasons due to the extreme height.

Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a high-capacity water pump capable of delivering 6,500 liters per minute (LPM), with sufficient pressure to reach up to 104 meters in height. A water monitor with a throw range of 70 meters is also installed to support high-elevation firefighting operations.

The rescue cage of this vehicle can safely carry up to 500 kg, enabling the evacuation of multiple individuals from elevated locations. The boom operations are entirely computer-controlled, utilizing precise sensors and controllers to ensure safe and accurate functioning. Operational data and diagnostics can be accessed directly from the vehicle’s onboard computer system.

The boom can also be operated using a remote control, providing flexibility during critical rescue or firefighting missions. In the event of sensor or system faults, the vehicle is equipped with telematics connectivity, which allows for remote diagnostics and identification of specific issues in real time.
